There has been quite the rise in impersonators around here lately and more and more people seem to fall for their scams. It has been suggested that there should be a post concerning the subject, in order to prevent users from getting scammed, however considering that ST is not actively moderated, we wouldn't be able to maintain such a topic currently. The warning about this subject is more on how to avoid or handle such scams.
Please make sure the ST profile being linked from the person adding you, actually belongs to them. Verify that their steam profile URL is the same as the one who added you to trade and obviously, please search for them on steamrep, don't ask them to link their profile/rep, just do it yourselves.
In the case of such a scam occuring, please report them to steamrep and SG support, by providing some proof of what happened and explaining any details (please attach screenshots of your chatlogs and their steam profile). Creating a thread on SG forums in not the way to go, as that will get you temporarily suspended for calling out. There have been incidents of the wrong person getting blamed for a scam and thus harassed for absolutely no reason.
Misuse of feedback has been turning out to be quite an issue, not only with messing up trades but also with reports on support about its removal. I think that most users are not aware of how it should be used thus this thread will serve as a reminder and a warning on how it should be used, how it shouldn't be used and what will happen if it's not used accordingly.
Common sense should apply in the above. The fact that I didn't mention a specific comment does not mean that it's acceptable. Misuse of feedback can get you suspended temporarily and if done repeatedly, suspension can get permanent. Revenge feedback, in particular, is especially tricky considering a lot of people want negative reputation removed from their profiles. If the people requesting the removal of negative rep from support have left such revenge negative feedback on the other user's profile, they can get temporarily suspended as well. Giving them revenge feedback does not make you any better than them.
Considering all the above, I would like to ask users here to remove any feedback they have left on other people's profiles that does not follow the guidelines above. Any investigation done on the removal of negative feedback from now on will take this thread into account and the fact that everyone should have read it and complied with it. No appeals will be handled for temporary misuse of feedback suspensions, considering you had the time to remove it yourselves.
Since lots of people ask :
Please attach some kind of proof of what happened if the comment doesn't contain an explanation.
Thank you for reading and good luck in your trades!
Thx you very much for this post. Finally we have created this post (However it would have been better to create a large and visible alert over the forum). I hope that new users read this before trade. I'm trying to help fight against impersonators many months ago Click Here.
Is there a way to request the deletion of negative feedback because of impersonators or scammers / banned users?. I have a negative feedback because of an impersonator problem for example. I know this is difficult to manage, and is not much important when u have a lot of rep. just asking...
Create a ticket under SteamGifts support concerning the feedback.
I've always given proof when disputing my feedback such as the a screenshot showing the person was repeatedly vulgar before leaving the feedback. In your situation the person is 3/18 and currently suspended, so that speaks for itself.
But there it says:
Reporting Users: If you're reporting a user, please do not use support. Instead, click the Report User button which is located on their profile.
Shouldn't that be used instead then?
UZuhl. You have been impersonated(If you already knew. Okay):
:( Always have impersonators cause of my high rep, ty for the warning and the post. Fucking Impersonators Scammers...
I kinda have to disagree with the "Revenge Feedback" thing. Obviously if it's between two traders and something negative has happened, then yeah - you shouldn't give negative feedback just because you've earnt it. But if someone gives you feedback for no reason (Perhaps you spotted a scammer, and they mark you down as a scammer instead... just off the top of my hat :P), surely you have reason to "revenge feedback" them for accusing you of scamming unjustly - although, yeah, they're the one's revenge scamming in this instance, why should you not do it in return?
I'm having a very hard time believing you even read the post.
Feedback should be used for :
Successfully completed trades.
Scammers/Impersonators and warning the community about those
if someone gives you feedback for no reason
"No reason" is not a valid reason to give feedback so as such, you'd report them for doing so and have it removed. Eliminating the revenge feedback is essentially the purpose of this post. When have two wrongs ever made a right?
Why should you not warn the other people that this person gives fakerep? In my eyes this is a legit reason to give someone negative. The other person breaks the rules, so you "mark" him negative because he did something negative. Its not the same like giving neg rep without any reason or because of a lie.
Unfortunately, we don't have some neutral feedback comment for the time being, in order to have those marked like that. Giving them negative feedback instead of reporting them will just let them do it to more profiles. What good will it do?
I think you misundertsood me, I did not mean that you should not report them. This should be additional. Since the reports takes some time (minutes/hours/days), this would be just prevention like in any case with a scammer.
Do as you'd like, but remember that rules are meant to be followed, if you don't want to follow them then you risk punishment.
p.s. It takes over two weeks to get a response on SteamGifts so I highly doubt we'll have active moderation anytime soon unless they hire a bunch of new support.
I think this "advice" is pretty bad. Just because someone disagrees with a rule does not mean that he should break this rule, a better way is complain/discuss about the rule (for example writing here while Rinarin still reads).
I'll be checking this thread and that's why it's open. We do need feedback on this and we do need feedback on ST in general.
That's why I'm not on support! :p
That's the truth though, rules are there to be followed even if you disagree. Support is always open to suggestions so long as you submit it in the correct manner. If you don't want to follow them, no one can force you to, but you must be aware that you could face repercussions.
I wasn't trying to advocate rule breaking, but it seemed as if you were refusing to accept the rules so "do as you'd like" or submit a suggestion to support were the only two real options. I should probably add that the correct way to make a suggestion is the same as everything else which is to create a ticket in the support section on SteamGifts.
If there was a +rep for posts, I'd hit it here.
Though, an addition to your post, concerning this thread, feel free to suggest things here. As previously mentioned, I need your feedback.
I am discussing this so it can be implemented somehow. Still unsure if that will be some extra category or just acceptable as a rep. As I said here, I'll try to update the OP with any changes soon.
Also I think that the part of the revenge neg rep should be changed in some way. When Trader1 does something wrong to Trader2, why should Trader2 not be able to "mark" this person as someone who claims false things? Why should the community not be warned about this person? It would be a legit reason to give someone a negative comment, because the person is telling lies about other traders. This is not the same like giving negative without any reason or for any lie.
EDIT: You mentioned that theres no active moderation. Do you have any plans to change this? Will Steamtrades get some moderators or can people apply at some places for this?
The community can also be warned by a Suspended tag in front of the user's profile name. A lot of negative reputation comments won't get someone suspended. Reports about them will.
Edit : Missed that part. I am not entitled to answer this at this point but we can hopefully change that soon. We don't have some application idea at the moment at least.
I didn't even know SteamTrades HAD moderators until you posted this sticky, and I've been here for a couple years now. I've had someone "revenge rep" me for ignoring their trade offer, when in fact I wasn't even online (they had replied to a month old post).
I posted a discussion thread in the S.Trades Steam group and got no response. Since I felt that an email to the address in the Contact Us link would fall into a black hole, I simply left negative rep.
Perhaps you can make the fact that you guys actually exist more prominent on the site? I felt like I had no other option.
They don't exist on this site, you have to go to SteamGifts and file a report to support through there. It's also mentioned already if you had looked for it.
Sticky: Site Guidelines, Trading Guide, & Comment Formatting
Site Guidelines, Rules & General Etiquette
Please submit any support requests in the Support Forum.
This goes back to my request. This information is two levels deep, in a sticky titled "Site Guidelines, Trading Guide, & Comment Formatting". Not the first place I would look for support information.
As I understand it it's only two levels deep now. It was just a single post before, so I guess that point isn't valid at the time I was having issues.
I'll check with the administrator if there can be an addition of a link to support from here. Can't say for sure though.
I can't blame you. It hasn't been actively moderated for quite a while and we usually act on reports alone.
Please make a ticket here for your request. We will be checking those soon but this thread needs some more visibility first, in order to both inform people and possibly minimize the damage.
The guy who gave me (my current) fake negative rep was suspended because of giving fake negative rep to multiple people. The rep still hasn't been removed from my profile and the suspension has ended already. Giving them some kind of comment on their profile is the only way to warn people that they are not the only ones in the situation.
In addition, it's the fastest way for you guys to remove the fake rep. The last time this happened, everyone who got fake rep from this one person got it removed within a couple of hours because they posted warning rep (including me). This time, I didnt realize I had fake rep until a couple of days afterwards. Everyone else who gave warning rep had their negative rep removed within a day, even without a support ticket. Meanwhile, I didn't give a "revenge" negative rep, so I'm stuck here with the blemish on my profile for far longer than everyone else.
Actually, that could have its own category instead of revenge reputation. After discussing it, we might add this to the acceptable list. Warning about someone leaving fake feedbacks. I will update the OP when it's certain.
Thanks for considering it.
My single -1 rep is from a revenge downvoter - is there anything I can do about that?
This was already asked and answered once in the thread.
Read and understood everything.
Since you request to remove negative feedbacks that don't follow strictly that rule, I'll do so.
Thanks for posting this, I am tired of seeing what a persons negative feedback is, only to see "LOL LOWBALLERZERZ LMAOROFL"
Hopefully it won't be abused for stupid shit anymore
Also, a crackdown of people who uselessly post in trade threads to just say "LOL" or "NONE WILL DO THIS" or something similar would be nice too. A block function would be nice on here too.
You tell 'em, Rinarin!
I agree with most of this but have to take issue with the final point about "Revenge Reputation". Fortunately a false negative rep has not happened to me, but when I see bad rep on a potential trading partner's profile I follow it to the other party's profile just to see what the former had to say about it (if anything). This is the only way that a trader can defend themself against false negative rep and it stems directly from the fact that there is no active moderation on here. If you are going to make a rule like that then there needs to be a moderating presence of some sort to hold up your end so-to-speak. Leaving this place practically abandoned and simply directing people to report such issues on Steamgifts and hoping that someone will get to it and fix everything does not really inspire confidence, sorry.
Also, speaking of a lack of moderating presence, there are sometimes people on here who post dozens of spam threads with the exact same content (titles and all), often on the same day.
Although I do agree technically that revenge feedback shouldn't be the way to counter a fake negative, the current lack of moderation kinda forces people's hand in that direction. Mods cannot currently delete that false negative feedback and we can't answer them on our own profile. Like ShadoWeN, when I see a negative feedback on someone's profile I click on it to see what's the other side of the story. I'm lucky enough to have tons of positive feedback and that it overshadows my fake neg, but having a random neg on a new trader could really damage it's reputation and seeing tons of negative feedback on the culprit's profile is often the only thing that can help those people. (We need to report them too, of course.)
I have no problem with negatives being deleted on both sides (mine and the other party) once support can intervene, but in the meantime please let us know how we're supposed to protect ourselves if you guys can't do anything more than suspend the culprit without undoing any of the damage?
Well said my good man.
^ Completely agree with this.
This thread was made both as a request and a warning, in advance to starting dealing with and removing feedback that was already reported so far. Giving users a few days so they can read and check their feedback before we start investigating those.
It will probably happen as you mention, feedback removed on both sides, unless proof of one part appears to be correct.
Yeah some people do check back to see where the rep came from but unfortunately not all do. As mentioned in the edit, we'll probably add "fake feedback" warning comments as acceptable.
Unfortunately, about the multiple threads, once again I can only direct you to a ticket on SG support in order to ask for their removal and action taken against the creator for now. Apologies I can't actively moderate those.
I read the rules and I agree.
Seem I like i just got an Impersonators, thank god no -rep have been made...
Anyway I agree with the new rules...
A while back I did a trade with SKEPTICK19, I sent him the Amazon keys, then he sent me an invalid key and blocked me on steam. I left negative feedback to warn others, and then about a week later, he leaves me negative feedback saying I tried scamming him!
(1) He scammed me a key
(2) Changed their "custom link" to their profile from "http://steamcommunity.com/id/DesuraShaun/" to " http://steamcommunity.com/id/ChinaShaun/" when i posted my BadRep with evidences on his steamtrades profile.
(3) This stupid guy neither knows how to lie!! As you can see on my screenshot, he posted a bad rep on my profile, attaching a false screenshot (Look now...where is the false co.ment?? xDD You can see the "original lie "in the screenshot)..... And changed it for two little phrases of the full trade, to lie to others users.
Screenshot with full conver and screenshots from their profile (Now private one more time), from the false bad rep, and evidences: http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/7249/scammeriy.png
Please, ban this motherfucker from this site!!!
Copy/Paste of my badrep on his profile
SCAMMER. Full SteamRep's info:
Have you reported them to SteamRep?
When taking screenshots of the conversation, be sure to include a bit from the previous screenshot to show it is being continued and there is nothing left out. In otherwords, make the last one or two lines from the previous screenshot the first one or two in the next one.
He has changed the screenshot he posted on your reputation to try and make it seem that you were being shady as opposed to his original "he scammed me". I really don't see where you guys agreed on a trade, it seems like you kinda forced it onto him by sending him the key, but oh well.
SteamRep doesn't allow to rep nothing with keys.
For that reason this type of user take profit from pages like this.
Well, I don't know who did the clean-up but it seems a lot of the fake -rep has disappeared from Steamtrades. I'd like to express a big thank you to whoever is responsible for this. :D
Aw... I still got mine. :( Ah well, I'll wear it like a BATTLESCAR!!!! GRRR!
Mine has been lifted! Whooot! I guess my battlescar healed! :D
So what i need to do if my 2 last reps are fake ? I even dont know these guys and never traded them but they gaved me negative rep lol
You are a good example for not knowing who scammed whom. You and the others who -rep you have plent/some -rep. Correct me if I am wrong.
If they commented mine profiles i commented their... so if i remove mine comments ill get those 2 removed ?
probably not without help of admin/moderator
so i need to contact... ? cg, lokonopa ?
Write a request to support
as Zomby2D says here . you need to be logged in on this site ofc.
Yes, this rules are good. But "gives fake rep"-comments are not good when given by both, fake repping guy and fake repped guy, because it may be hard to get to know who is actually the real victim of fake rep.... Hmm..
Rinarin, thank you very much for the SG Support link. I was not aware of it beforehand. Thanks for the informative post, and have a great day!
There's not one solution that's a fix all. But this is a definite step in the right direction imo. As with most new rules and or guidelines it will take time to iron out the kinks to adapt it properly. Even then there will always be those who agree and disagree with said rules. Bottom line is rules are made to be followed, so it's up to us members that give a damn about this community to set examples, follow them and when needed help to debate and amend these rules to work better within the community.
Tl;Dr: Thanks ST for a step in the right direction and for listening. :)
I have an impersonator here: beware guy...
Some ugly stuff going on with this guy's profile:
He left some negs on the profiles of people trading 2K keys that got exploited using cancelled pre-orders on Amazon. They left revenge feedback.
shut up, you leave more fake rep than anyone.
Says the guy who left me a neg for refusing his shitty scam offer. Ninja adding people hoping to catch them unaware with your super-lowballs is what scum like you does best.
I didn't leave a neg for that.
I left negative feedback because you unadded me without a reply to my offer. Then you called me a scammer on my profile.
Learn what scammer means; getting an offer you don't like =/= scamming.
Ninja adding people? lol. Super low-balls? lol.
Hi just want to inform you that this guy (http://steamcommunity.com/id/JackTheWhitee) was trying to addme a minutes ago.
This user (scammer): http://www.steamtrades.com/user/kadochnicov
Is threatening me to leave some negative reps on my profile (probably from his friends): Take a look:
(TRANSLATION: "Hahaha LMAO... Take care about your SteamTrades profile, which could receive a bunch of -rep, you fool")
The complete story is on SteamRep forums:
Yes, is scammer... Post negative on my profile too few minutes ago...
Now everybody can see who is the real scammer, just taking a look on ur profile.
He is an scammer, also post negative in my profile for defend Fefere and Rajon.
i got -rep ... http://www.steamtrades.com/user/CiobyID from this retarded kid " http://www.steamtrades.com/user/darkrai531 "and i don`t even know it why or WTF ???
can any help me ?
It's seen nobody cares. I have 2 similars -REP too.
yes that`s the problem with this forum, but if i say something like "nigger" "jew" "shit beggars" every troll admin etc gives a fuck and i get suspended ...
yea, staff on steamgift is bad i have a scammer that wrote on my profile and moderator have NO RIGHT to remove it and the admin have been asked to remove it 2 month ago, but still nothing happened
stole 2 keys
i have proof
I had a scammer use http://steamcommunity.com/id/Darkdude8/
I find it overly hilarious that none of the +/- reps on boobs girls account are allowed within these rules. :D :D
hello there, after reading the topic, i think i have 4 negative reps including the fake one posted by a sourceop taggued scammer on my profile that breaks the rules and maybe should be removed
FelixPrime, gave me a negative and called me idiot and chump cause i didn't added him for trade.. i wrote in my topic: "do not add me please", and he did! i hope you'll remove this, guys, thx for reading!
Some guy actually started arguing with me about what I SHOULD want for my games (ones I listed in my thread), despite the fact that I didn't want them and that I had them, and he got quite obnoxious about it. I wanted to leave him negative rep, to mark him as an obnoxious trader, but I'm not sure if that qualifies as "proper" use of the feedback system, and was wondering if you guys could clarify.
Edit: OH LOL he just made feedback on my page: - Will go ahead and report him now.
Edit 2: It's gone, thanks support :D
There is another scammer impersonating me and other trusted traders. Watch out!!!
More info here
WARNING: JuanBlue85 http://steamcommunity.com/id/Juanblue85/
is being impersonated by:
Proof: He was trying to scam my DmC key by showing real Juanblue85's steamtrades rep and telling me to go first:
hello I'm the real Juanblue85. I wanted to say that I'm shocked that someone is impersonating me now due to my high rep and also please see that I have many games registered to my account unlike them who has a puny amount and also you can see that I don't have some of those games like none of the Counter Strike games and I don't even like TF2 that much anyway so I don't even have it as a group support.
^ that guy wanna to scam my amd bundle as well asking me to give him the key 1st, sound fishy and i del him right away
Thanks for seeing through his tricks I don't even go begging people for their keys like this impersonator has been doing. Judging by the time you posted your message I wasn't even at home yet. I just came home from work at almost 3PM EST. I work from 5:30am till 2pm and it takes me close to an hour to get home.
Here is the impersonator doing his rather pathetic attempt to scam BlackMamba.
Scamming Attempt by Impersonator Credit Goes to BlackMamba for the evidence.
BlackMamba has contacted me about this person's actions and I have reported the impersonator on steam. I will very likely report them on steamrep as well. Also I have added a warning message about the impersonator on my profile and have changed my avatar.
It would be nice if support wasn't so slow processing fake rep removal requests. It has been over three weeks since I submitted a ticket, and I haven't yet had it processed. :(
I am currently was negatively rep'ped for NO REASON. The guy doesn't even trade here - his account on steamtrades is absolutely new so I guess it is fake just to put me minus of jealousy. I hope support can remove this negative rep because it is really unjustified. I have done nothing wrong.
Posted on his profile explaining the situation. And the guy just cannot be contacted on steam - he doesn't use this account for trade.
You are being impersonated, as well as me. Take a look. Try to contact victims like I'm doing so you can explain them what happened and help them report this guy and mostly will remove the negative rep.
Be careful about an impersonator "hunting" for new traders today. He's impersonating me and have been already reported. I noticed some negative rep from people I never dealed with so I investigated and found out about him. One of the victims checked it with me and changed his vote to advice other traders.
Here is the report at steamrep.
he just tried to trade with me
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198073816523/ is him
DO NOT TRADE WITH THIS PERSON! LOOK AT THE USERS LAST USED NAMES, >Roo2T, Crothgar etc
He's being reported in steamrep but those guys are soooo slow marking him. Now he changed his nick to Crystal.
This guy impersonated me as well, so I added some "info" to steamrep about him as well as talked all but one victim. Fortunately, some of them even managed to save chats screenshots etc. Hope he will get what he deserves fast!
Still need to contact the last guy to clear my reputation out of this scum yet he just refuses to talk.
Same as me, 1 left and I cannot contact him but I'll keep trying.
Cleared all mine. Even gifted them little something to cheer them up.
Just discussed a trade with him knowing about this from the get go. He used Lucas as a profile name and linked to LucasC. PM if you want screenshots.
It will also make price better because traders won't be able to discriminate among different people.
Thanks in advance.
Since this a**hole of a user impersonated Roo2T and cleverly scammed me they have changed their name three times which are Crystal, Sait0x and Lucas.
Be careful with this guy: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198085688875/
He is impersonating me, scamming people with my Nickname and my avatar.
UPDATE/EDIT: Valve has trade-banned this scammer
IMERSONATOR / CHARGEBACK-SCAMMER ALERT:
|steamID: HaZe (CURRENT ONLY AS OF THIS EDIT - HE CHANGES ID'S)
|customURL: HE CHANGES CUSTOM URL'S WITH EVERY ALIAS
Aliases he is using:
I would like to report this (http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198036790353) guy he is a scammer having his friends leaving positive feed back on his page and according to steamrep has scammer friends also he seem to be using name that he will change after scamming usually containing St0ne in it.
the same guy as i wrote...
How can i add him as scammer? he is scammer! Be careful! How to add him as scammer at steamrep?
Generally, you need to go to the Steamrep forums and provide evidence. If you are collecting evidence, here is a place to start.
ppaolo gave me a spam negative comment, please remove and ban him.
This guy http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198081451808/ impersonating this guy profile with his high rep on steamtrades http://www.steamtrades.com/user/fenetic
he went offline after i found out impersonating fenetic http://i.imgur.com/tF4jHWG.jpg
Thank you, I will report him on steamrep.
Scammer alert here too,
He add me with no reason, asking for a trade, and he pretended to make me go first.
After i`ve got some scammer evidences: large list of diferent names, closed inventory, add with no reason, no steamtrades profile...
i`ve searched in google, and for my surprise i found him, the same photo, the same profile,
He is a known scammer. Also, I believe he is the same as user "Tsok" reported above. Be careful.
Umm I swear I'm not an impersonator
I just want to inform the community that I wont be able to bump my thread regarding scammers/impersonators. So I would like to ask you to bump this thread for the next 10 days (until 01/04/2013). Thank you!
I can do if I have paid for an item by paypal steamtrades a member and to receive payment, this disappears and blocks all communication?
He is clearly marked as a scammer on Steamrep. Always visit Steamrep.com before trading.
If you have his user profile for steamtrades and screenshots, you can file a ticket at steamgifts to get him banned here as well. Also open a ticket with paypal to dispute the charge.
okay, thanks men....
Scammer alert: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198061742837
He's impersonating maross80 (nice reputation) and he stole a copy of Fallout 3 from me (what can I say, I'm a newbie here).
!!!!!!! i just want to send my THANKS to Support guys they had replied to my ticket thanks guys !!!!!!
