This morning Steam Support returned me my account! Horray! :)

I got hit. And here is the full story: I've got that pm form a person on my friend list. I wasn't really looking on the url and just clicked away. I clicked add a friend, and after that it asked me to log in. I entered my user name and pass. After that I've got a prompt from steam guard asking me to enter that code. Got the code on email. That was a bit strange to me but steam guard has glitched on me few times, so I've entered the code that arrived on my email. After that the site just returned me to main steam page. In 2 mins I've got email from steam that my email has successfully been changed. Then I was petrified...
Ive gone to report that my account has been hijacked, when i've noticed that my steam got sign off. I tried to sign in again but it kept failing. I tried to retrieve account but the mail never arrived (the mail address was changed). I've made a report to Steam Support.
Then I've noticed that I'm still signed in on the web browser. I've seen first hand how the guy traded all my stuff to some other accounts. All of them were from Russia. I've taken screenshots of trade history and how he is emptying my account. Sent all of that to Steam Support. After the account was empty (he traded around 400 of my tf2 keys, 40 dota 2 keys, and around 100 games from my inventory), he started spamming people in my friends list with that malicious link. I've tried to warn as many of them as I could that they should not click on any links they get from me, and that they should report Hijack. I got confirmation that my account "infected" at least one other from my friends list.
Emptying the account took around 1h. And sending the malicious messages started after that. I just hope Valve and Steam Support will help me first get my account back, and maybe some of my inventory stuff. I know that I've got myself to blame for being so stupid. I practically gave this guy my account on a silver plate. It's been really stressful night for me. I would like to thank a lot of users who helped in reporting my account and writing on my page to warn others. I dont want to "infect" anyone else. I couldn't look at my account like that any more so I've closed the web chat, ending all "control" I had left of my account.
Be safe people and dont be stupid like me. :(
info from steamguard (I stupidly overlooked!): a new computer located at IP address: 46.118.100.222 Our records show this IP address is in KIEV KYYIV UA

My friends account got hijacked the same way about 3 weeks back. He could see where all his inventory was going, guy was moving it between 4 accounts.. he was from Russia also. It took steam about 2 days to reply and asked him for some further info then they replied a day later and gave him back his account. They also gave him back his inventory, but they only do it once as a good gesture. My friend also happens to be on your friend list so ill pass this info onto him.

I've wrote a whole lot to steam support. I just hope they will also help me. I'm just terrified how widespread this is...

Yeh they should send another notification to your email with a code or link to verify that its you and that you want to change the email address that's linked to your steam account or maybe a two step process like Hotmail uses where each time you sign in you have to input a code that you get either by call or text to the mobile you linked to the account. Anyway, once the email is changed its useless since you cant even try and change your password and you have to play the waiting game.

This is most likely the reply you will get from steam, so make sure you provide these details so hopefully you get it back faster.

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

In order to investigate this issue, we must verify your ownership of the software and associated Steam Account(s).

If you purchased software through Steam with a credit card, please confirm the card type (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), full name, and last four digits of the card used with the order(s).

If you purchased software through Steam through PayPal, please provide the PayPal account holder billing information (name and address) and the PayPal Invoice ID. The Invoice ID will be 16-18 digits long and comprised of only numbers. It may be listed as the Order Description Number.

If you registered software purchased at a retail location, please handwrite your Support Ticket Number 6344-WGHB-8099 directly on the quick reference card or sticker above the CD Key (the number should not be written on a separate piece of paper or inserted with an image editor) and reply with a digital photo or scan of the CD Key in .jpg format. Please ensure that you submit a full-color image, rather than a photocopy.

so sad to read he took your bunch of stuff on your inventory as what you said he traded around 400 of your tf2 keys, 40 dota 2 keys, and around 100 games from your inventory. THose guys are trageting people with lots of stuff in inventory and with high rep in steamtrades to scam people.

Same thing happened to me. All he took were 11 TF2 keys. I'm still logged on through the webapp, so I erased everyone from my friends list.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Sorry to hear that. but good thinking that you erased friends so no one else gets "infected" through your account. Did he(them) change your steam email also?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Bump! Sorry to hear that dude :(

1 decade ago
Permalink

Thanks guys. Yeah the email was changed to (and still is) luksour105@mail.ru
Just waiting for Steam to get back me. I presume it will get sorted in the next few days. It's 11am in Seattle so I suppose there's a chance I might get a mail back by end of business.
I feel stupid to get duped like this, but I feel worse for people who got loads of stuff taken. I didn't think anything was going to get taken at one time cause it took the guy around 4 hours to get around to actually robbing me. I suppose with only 11 TF2 keys I wasn't high up his list of priorities.

1 decade ago
Permalink

yeah, mine was also changed to luksour###@mail.ru. so it either is the the same exact guy, or this is very well organised :/

1 decade ago
Permalink

I take it you havn't heard anything back steam?

1 decade ago

Got my account back this morning. Also got back my tf2 keys. I didn't get back my Dota2 keys or my Inventory Games, but I hope they will be helpful with that one also.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Yeah i got mine back this morning. All that was taken was 11 TF2 keys, which I got back. Steamguard is now enabled so I can't trade for 2 weeks which is a slight bummer but at least they were quick enough with the responses.

Hope that too. Still no news from steam support, but as people say it takes them 2 days to respond, so I'm watching closely my email.

1 decade ago
Permalink

yeah i see that you are still offline with no games/tf2 keys in inventory.:(

1 decade ago
Permalink

Yes. I guess the hijacker moved on to another targets leaving my account at rest. I hope that steam support will act soon at least giving me control of my account.

never click on links without checking, heck i dont click on links from any1 except my most trusted friends even that after checking it properly.

Bump! Sorry for you man.

Welcome to the club:( Same happened to me. I would not be surprised if you got message from me because you are/was on my friends list. I got same message from guy on my friend list and also i didn't look at it, i've just clicked. I'm waiting 48h and still didn't get mail from support. And this hijacking is probably big chain reaction who started who knows when.

that's sad man. I got a few friends who got scammed that way, and I can tell you that you won't get your items back. only thing that can happen is that you can get your account back.

1 decade ago
Permalink

I've been reading on steam forums that if this was a first hijacking of the account they get you back your items as a sign of good faith. It would be really bad if they won't at least give me back my tf2 items which are easily trackable (every tf2 item has unique code).

1 decade ago
Permalink

that sucks that they still haven't gotten the account back for you man :( good luck

1 decade ago
Permalink

i know. they could at least let me get it back and worry about inventory later. can't play good games :/

1 decade ago
Permalink

I got mine back this morning

1 decade ago
Permalink

yes me too :) i will now ask then for my gifts back

1 decade ago
Permalink

Hope everything gets sorted out... Steam will return just about everything that was inventory once you do get back your account, but that's only a 1 time thing I think.. So be careful

Good luck :)
