I have...

Been scammed out of $40. Read desc for a little more detail. Scammer: [redacted because someone said callouts aren't allowed. seems like all that does is help the scammer but ok]

I want...

You to watch out. One again read the des so you know how I fell for it.

I'm posting everywhere he does so people know. Scammed me out of the last bit of money I had - all I could afford with what I had. Screw him. I can try to give more info if you want (add on steam to send pics, etc)
… I did not meet him here but I feel I should still warn you all.

Basically, I'm super new to this. I went out and got $40 because that's what I could afford to get without having to worry if I spent too much. We started a trade and he contacted me on steam. His profile and everything was public and there were recent +rep comments. They didn't look like bots, so I went first and sent the codes (albeit after a long conversation of him saying he wants me to go first since I'm new. I am new so it didn't seem fishy.) I checked his profiles and stuff and couldn't find evidence of scams. I send him the 2 codes and he blocks me. End of story. There's probably a million tells I missed but I'm new. Helluva way to get introduced trading. 40 fucking dollars, that's a friggin fortune for my broke arse lmao.

Looking at it now, most of the +reps are very new. Steamrep profile is really empty and untouched. Should've know but I'm new so yay.

Once again, I can add you on steam to give screenshots of convos if you like, as proof. You'll probably be utterly embarrassed by my trade skills but I'm pissed that lazy pieces of trash like this exist so idc. Get of your arses, get a job.

It's a bit to ask but I can, over steam chat, provide screenshots and stuff, and for that I was hoping to at least get some help (like advice, I'm def not asking for 40 bucks lol).

Pretty sure call outs aren't allowed, might want to delete his name or something in case you get a ban or whatever.

+rep on Steam profiles doesn't mean shit. Seriously. It's worthless. Never let it have any bearing on your decision when considering a trade. Steamtrades rep is king and also look users up on steamrep.com as well, it shows any bans etc they've had for various things, including trade scams iirc.

Did you check that the Steamtrades profile links to his actual Steam profile? It's not uncommon for scammers to set up a profile that looks the same but isn't in order to fool people who don't check/only casually check.

Make sure you leave -rep on their ST profile.

I found out the hard way a few times about dodgy 'traders' the same, sucks you've lost the cash though. Don't let it put you off trading, just make sure you do your due diligence in the future. Protect yourself first, I guarantee legit traders are doing the same.

Can't leave a -rep as he deleted me, blocked me, and set is profile comments to friends only. :(

Not being able to call out seems like it only helps the scammer.

steamtrades profile =/= steam profile

As he mentioned, steam profile reps don't mean anything, and you can just delete negative comments.

Yeah, leave a negative rep on his Steam Trades profile. Not his Steam profile.

I agree about the callouts thing helping the scammer. I'm not 100% sure it's a thing on Trades, but it's definitely not allowed over on Steam Gifts, so best to air on the side of caution until you've got a clear answer on the matter.

Hello, I'm very sorry this happened to you.

You should definitely upload the screenshots to imgur and the like if you don't mind the public seeing the whole thing, and leave a -rep to the scammer's profile here + screenshot links, these can't be deleted unless the community (randomly selected users) consider the -rep to be unjustified or unrelated to a trade.

Do not accept unsolicited steam adds, always add people after at least discussing the beginnings of a trade here and from the steam link provided in their profile here. If someone adds you on steam, still doesn't hurt to check if their steam profile match the one in this site.

As the others mentioned, beware impersonators and always check for matching profiles between steamtrades/steam.
