Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to Steamtrades. Been dealing with folks on here for a little under a month. So far I've enjoyed my stay and those I've traded with here have all been excellent.

For those who don't know, I'm one of those individuals who has very few Steam gifts/keys to trade, so I do a lot of my "trading" via Paypal. I've been a Paypal member for a long time and my account has always been "verified."

That changed today.

I was in the middle of a trade with Sublime for his Runner2 gift and after he received my payment, he let me know that my account was unverified. Shocked, I looked on my Paypal account page. Unfortunately for me, he was absolutely correct. He still went through with the trade, but was more than a little cautious over the whole thing and immediately thought he was heading into scam territory. Quite frankly, I don't blame him one bit.

Doing some research, I found that Paypal has changed their rules for account verification. These went into effect on or about April 1st, 2013. Now, either submission of bank account details or the approval of a Paypal line of credit is necessary to have your account verified in the U.S. Other countries may have different rules and requirements. You can find out more here:

A Google search results in a number of articles regarding the recent changes to the verification process:

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=paypal+makes+changes+to+verification&oq=paypal+makes+changes+to+verification&gs_l=serp.3...6490.12242.0.12522.49.39.0.0.0.5.193.3685.28j11.39.0...0.0...1c.1.9.psy-ab.P7tzOYCNHH4&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&fp=d521b73b6f9aefce&biw=1366&bih=651

I called Paypal and confirmed the changes to their verification policies. Truthfully, I have enough credit already from other sources and do not require more. I also feel quite uncomfortable giving Paypal access to my bank accounts. The representative tried to explain that now, "unverified" accounts aren't a bad thing. I kindly remarked that in the real world of online transactions where trust is a huge concern, being unverified is a big red flag.

I hope I can continue doing business on Steamtrades, but I completely understand why sellers would be hesitant giving up their games to anyone with an unverified Paypal account.

This is disheartening to say the least. Just figured other folks should know.

In last 2 months paypal include more changes, for example, now u cant send money as a gift, now is called "family and friends". Anyways, i dont know what is the problem, verified or unverified only says that if u have a linked credit card or bank account or not. If u have money in your paypal account u can send money without problems, verified or not.

You're right... there isn't a problem sending money or with others receiving it. It's the matter of trust between me and the seller.

I originally got my Paypal account when I was doing a lot of buying off of eBay. On there, I found that an unverified account is a really REALLY bad thing to have. That is, some folks won't do business with you at all if your account is unverified. I've seen similar sentiments in quite a few of the threads created here... that Paypal buyers with unverified accounts shouldn't make offers and are otherwise unwelcome to trade.

So now, because I won't get a Paypal credit card or submit my bank information, my account can't be verified. That puts an obstacle between me and the seller. Hopefully people here will understand that "unverified" has a completely different meaning now, but I certainly can't blame them if they don't or won't.

Even knowing what I know now, I'd be cautious in doing business with someone who is "unverified."

Once you are logged into Paypal, you can always check the status of anyone, at the following address:

https://www.paypal.com/us/verified/pal=EMAIL-ADDRESS-HERE

Don't forget to replace the text EMAIL-ADDRESS-HERE with a valid e-mail address.
