Hey just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post this.
I feel better knowing I was turning down a scammer and not my actual steam chat buddy.
I'm glad you could avoid disaster!
I hope your buddy was able to recover their account without many issues - I didn't expect this thing to still be ongoing 2 months after I fell for it myself 2 months prior when it was rampant...but I had a few others in the trade circle message me with the same speech to this day - so I finally decided that a warning here may be warranted.
I indeed didn't know of this, thank you for the tip - I will check it out and set it up tomorrow!
Heya, I don't have it anymore :) I generated a key for a family member awhile back, sorry I can't help!
Occasional messages from my trader friends hijacked accounts for something similar and this has been going on for 2+ months
What is this scam:
Hijackers impersonate and go through the steam friend list of the compromised account, asking other users to "help vote" or similar stories, but basically it's to access a fake website in order to grab your steam login details.
If you are contacted by someone (friend or trade acquaintance) asking you to go to a suspicious link/login
It is possible that the owner of the account is a victim themselves, you can help by leaving them a message on SG or ST to let them know what happened.
(barter user's profile page comes with links to their ST aswell), once you have the steam ID, put this in the address bar https://www.steamgifts.com/go/user/<Steam ID here> or just the "user search bar" on ST.
If you think your account may have been compromised
