Good people of Steam,

Today I come, not bearing keys or games, not with offers or deals, but with a mission. I was dying for a copy of Rome II Total War. I opened up a trade offering keys for a copy. Miraculously, someone added me selling it for a key or two cheaper than usual. Everything seemed legit. Allegedly bought from a Russian store where everything was slightly cheaper, I gave him the keys, checking his linked steamtrades profile, his steam (non-private) inventory, the whole shebang. After trading him my 8 keys, he promptly removed me. And so, like the Romans I was so inspired by, I was filled with revenge. The Romans were terrifying not for their military, or their tactics, or their ruthlessness. They were feared for their tenacity, their persistent, their endless drive to win. That is what I feel today, right now. I will not let him get away unpunished. And so, I set out, determined to let everyone and anyone know of him, and prevent any others from being as unfortunate as I.

"Sherluck" a.k.a Unstoppable7

THIS LOVELY GENTLEMAN above is the scum of the steam world, the most base, shallow kind that infests the world of honest gamers.

To add insult to injury, after I spread word of his actions, he proceeded to -rep me, having the AUDACITY to call me a scammer, as if I'd ever be one of his ilk.

Please, spread the word. Do not let him profit anymore. Do not accept any invites by him.

If we let these scammers continue, the terrorists win.

Amen, and God Bless.

"checking his linked steamtrades profile", did he provide you with that link? In that case, he provided you with the real "
sherluck" steamtrades profile, the person who he is impersonating, and not his real profile. I recommend you to use Enhanced Steam add-on, it shows you the real steamtrades profile from his steam profile page. Using that, you could have seen that the scammer already has 12 negative votes, dating from 2 weeks ago. Hope you won't get scammed any more.

Never trade game gifts, tf2 keys, or dota treasure keys for game keys or you'll eventually get scammed. Even if they give you the game key you can still get scammed if the payment for the game key defaults. Steam will remove the game and you will lose your item(s) for checking the box and agreeing to give it to them.

It is very easy to get scammed, as there are always scammers lurking in these forums, and there are a variety of scams that people use to get items. There are even middle-man scams you have to watch out for. A couple things to watch out for are private profiles, traders who try to rush a trade, or traders that act like they don't understand your language very well. The latter two are used as a distraction so you don't notice the scam.

Finally, when you are about to do a trade, especially if you're not using the trade window, be wary of other windows open from your friends list. Sometimes scammers work together to try and complete a scam. Be cautious of who and why people are adding you to their friends list. If someone is suspicious, it is better to just delete them.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully this helps other traders out there, it certainly helps me. I wonder if this thread can evolve into something much bigger.. :)

Hopefully, but people will always chase after those "to good to be true" deals. There are also some very clever scammers out there that scam in ways you wouldn't think of until you experience or hear about them. From what I've seen scammers will simply repeat their scam over and over until they get a victim and/or exhaust their resources.

There are no active moderators here, the best you can hope for is to submit a ticket to the support and hope they actually do something about it, but by then it will probably too late anyways. And don't even bother with steamrep, those lazy bastards no longer investigate any cases involving keys.

In any case, I believe this the scumbag who scammed you (among many others). And in case you're curious, this the real sherluck (the good guy, not the scammer).

In any case, always verify who you're actually dealing with, don't take their word for it.

That really sucks. He added me too yesterday, but thankfully I saw a warning from the real Sherluck.

Report him to Steamrep so he doesn't ever trade with that account again

Just a tip, never trade keys for a game code without making 100000% sure it's the real person, and even then I suggest taking a lot of screenshots

Don't bother with Steamrep, they are now USELESS. They won't investigate cases that involves keys and they wont investigate impersonators..as I said, they are now useless.

Really sucks man!! Shitty scammers screwing stuff up for everyone. I've got some Dirt BTA from happy hour I've been trying to get rid of cheap but because of ass holes like this anything really cheap gets looked at as a probable scam. Anyway, sorry this shit happened to you and hope it doesn't deter you from trading with all the good people around here in the future! Feel free to add me for a Dirt BTA on the house, it's not Rome, but at least you'll get something out of a shitty situation.

"Trading items/gifts for CD Keys. You cannot add a CD Key into the trade window. CD Keys that are offered can be for a different game, fake, used or region restricted. A common example of this trade is trading items/gifts in return for a promotional CD Key that is never given to you."

-Steam basically says that if you got scammed in trading game keys - THATS ITS YOURS AND ONLY YOURS FAULT BECOUSE STEAM INFORMS YOU ABOUT THAT!

So stop b*tching about scammers. You wanted extra cheap new game, or you was too greedy to pay full price.. Even if you get game key - IT COUL BE REVOKED ANY DAY (ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET IT EXTREMELY CHEAP). TRADING GAME KEYS IS ALWAYS AND I MEAN ALWAYS IS A RISK!
