From my experience, Indie Gala gift urls are freely viewable to anyone who has the link, even after it's bound to an email, which is why I'm particularly cautious with them.
It's not just an issue with scamming, but also invalid keys that can crop up due to technical issues, mix-ups, time-limited keys or whatever else... I once traded with someone (with flawless high rep, and he offered to go first) that sent through three invalid keys, which was an honest mix-up on his part. Anyway, it's simply a good idea to avoid trading for keys that you're not going to use immediately.
Especially considering Indie Gala's limited support (up to 60 days after purchase), I'd rather hold onto a gift that I know will be valid and wait for something I will use, rather than taking on more stock. It's nothing personal.

I personally never have had an issue with the invalid situation your talking. I have actually at least 7 indie pack after market to round out my collection, but i am sure like all thing else in this world their is a risk that it may happen. Good luck and happy trading.
