Not sure where you are but we (the uk) are now on cash system. Though you can still redeem the points for market value, which isn't what you'd pay in the shops. Google it and you'll find the price you should get.
I'm in Canada. Right now we're still using Microsoft Points, though people in the dashboard beta are already using real cash moneys.
Admittedly, I'm a bit out of the loop. Haven't been much of an Xbox user for a couple years now. But as of 2011 at least Microsoft point codes were regional; US point codes could only be used on US accounts, Canadian point codes on Canadian accounts, UK point codes on UK accounts, etc. It may be different now, but that's how it was at least until very recently. Xbox LIVE Gold Membership codes however were worldwide, and thus could be used on any account. I used to buy US Gold codes quite frequently and use them on my Canadian account because it was always $5-$10 cheaper.
Damn, wish i knew about the gold :( Get mine direct from dashboard usually for half the price but i always ring up just before to "cancel" my payment method as i "no longer need" and they usually give you a knock-down cheaper than dashboard offer.
