This is a post to raise awareness on the issue of cd-keys and digital keys for games that are steamworks titles as well as origin titles. Although there is nothing wrong with trading for keys when the keys are legit, there is the possibility that the key you are using is not legit. This can be probably the case with leaked and/or stolen keys from sites and databases (current ones are dead island, dirt 3, AI war, Portal 2)...

These keys are also typically removed from your account at some point in the future so you may want to avoid trading for these (unless if the trader can provide proof of legitimacy, such as the key email from AMD if it was from the promo, or a scan of the receipt as proof of purchase of game). Source for DI, Portal 2, and AI

The usual practice for keys is that the key holder goes first. However, with the new system, people cannot see how old or new the users are to the site, and with the removal of the invite system, it is now even easier for scammers to come to the site to try and fool people out of their games (by offering non existent or stolen keys) or out of their legit keys (by saying they will give a game after they see the key is valid, taking the key but not giving anything).

So the conclusion is:

  1. avoid known leaked or exploited keys, such as Dead Island, Portal 2, AI War, Dirt 3
  2. trade keys with caution (and this is both for legit key holders looking for a good trade and game holders looking for a game that is available as a key) bearing in mind the possible consequences
