By that logic, it means when someone sends you a phishing link, he's not a scammer because he doesn't force you to click it?
no its sending you a trade offer, he has not aimed to be anything it is not, hes not messaged you sayin i sent you an offer to buy your civ, if your stupid enough to accept offers you dont want then thats your own fault
Okay, it is stupid on my side not to check the trade offer properly and accept it but you can't deny it's a trick that they do on purpose, especially if they are using private profiles. You may not agree with me and think it as a legit way to make profit out of people's unawareness but it's your own opinion and I won't argue with it.
Not enough information to state that it was a scam. It could be a mistake at reading your thread and a non refunding policy.
Note that most of these 'traders' use private/low level profiles to send the offer. Why? Because they know it's wrong and they don't want their main to be blocked and known for using a dirty trick.
The text is somewhat confusing so to make it readable:
you sell game HERPY DERPY for 2 TF2
instead of getting an offer FROM SOMEONE to buy YOUR HERPY DERPY game for 2TF2, they offer to sell you HERPY DERPY for YOUR 2TF2
you rejoice at first glance and accept, because you failed checking the offer or were in a rush or whatever (= not paying attention)
There's lots of rats everywhere, some do this on purpose while others plain fail to read whatever you put on offer...
Regardless it is your responsibility to accept/decline correctly (since you can't controll them anyway).
NOT a scam, but a dick move if on purpose (know it myself some SHIT is on price Error > Offers go around like crazy) ...
well its seems like a thing of the past anyway (enjoy dat gift regionlock for most shit).
I don't want to appear rude or mean here but...
I don't think you have much room to complain here because you accepted the trade with nothing but your own discretion. Good traders make profit, but I don't see how you "lose 1 key" here because you can just sell it off again for 2 keys. You simply bought another copy for the same price you're selling at (and can earn back those two keys by selling it at), unless you agree that your own price is a ripoff?
We all make mistakes while trading, but this trade was completely preventable by simply reading the text Valve has given us that distinguishs who is offering what. Instead of posting a thread in hopes people would agree with you, you should be noting down what went wrong for yourself. You should also make it a practice to not accept trades from people until you see their Steam Trades page, and simply ignore invitations from private profiles altogether.
The Civ is just an example, I didn't really fall for it but it's the most recent of those offers that I've got :D You may be scammed for a bigger value item than Civ, also the ones that are hard to sell. This thread is aimed to gather your opinions on whether you guys approve it as a legit way to make profit or not, and to warn you if you haven't heard/experienced it before..
I am sorry but this is not a Scam. There is no fishing link, no attempt to steal your account, no attempt to fool you with false message for steam wallet funds, no paypal scam and you are not trading anything except what is in the trade window. It is bad thing to do, but it is completely legit. If the Trade is according to valve's rules and laws, everything is ok. Even now if i send you a trade offer 1 CS:GO card for all your inventory with no SCAM text (either in the offer or in chat) and you accept it, then in this situation it is only your fault for not keeping your eyes open
EDIT: The dude who did this to you is clearly from the type "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist" He found a simple but completely legit trick (btw for real this is not so hard to spot on, so i doubt it deserves the word trick) and you fell for it - Simple as that.
It may not be a scam but it is DEFINITELY a new (since nobody here has yet to mention "it's old story blabla") way to rip off traders. Beware, guys..
Could be, also it is very specific case, due to the requirement both parties to have N number of same items, which is not impossible, but still..
is that so - in order to work you both have to have 1 copy of the game and you to have keys. i said N number because that depends on what you are offering and what you have. In order this trick to succeed you have to have exactly the same items you are also looking for.
EDIT: Example - you have Civ 5 and 4 Tf2 keys, you want 2 tf2 keys, i have just once civ 5 copy - it can work, but if i lack the Civ 5 copy or you have 1 or no Tf2 keys, it wont work. It is also possible largescale scenario with 2 or 3 games being traded, that is what i meant.
Traders usually put up any keys as their wishlist so most of the time it doesn't matter which keys you'll be using for the trade. Well if he's using private/alternate profile, we can't know what he is having in his main account. Maybe he's someone with 1000 games in his main and does this business on his spare time?? Who knows :D

Once same happened to me. Scammer also changed his profile picture and name as mine. It was too much confusing. Lucky I didn't fall for that.
Lately I've been receiving 'tricky' trade offers. Why tricky? Because it's deceiving to your eyes and it makes you lose money if you fall for it.
Well, Civ V used to cost like 1 TF key if you bought it at 75% discount from a Russian. So for example, a guy sends me a trade offer which is his Civ V for my 2 TF keys. At a glance, for people who's selling Civ V for 2 keys like me, it would look like he's actually buying your game at your intended price instead of selling it to you. If you accept it, it means you would lose 1 key and gain a game you want to get rid off for profit.
Do you see this as a scam method? No? Normally, I wouldn't as well but I fell for it once. I added the guy and when I told him that I mistook the trade and asked nicely whether he could revert it, he removed me from friend list and blocked me. By then I knew he intended to scam me.
