I'm glad you did not get scammed. One of the oldest tricks in a scammer's book: they target new and unexperienced users by pretending to be someone else. Don't accept random invites at Steam and always double check the profiles you are trading with here and at steamrep.com.

I think it is better to be more skeptical when it comes to random strangers on the internet. Try to save the conversations you have during a trade, this way you have some proof to open a dispute in case the other party does not deliver. Also, I recommend reading How to spot and avoid Steam Trade Scammers and Common Scams and How to Avoid Them to get familiar with most common scam methods.
