Can't help you there, the reply function is rather wacky indeed :/ I'm used to having lots of tabs open (currently 37 of 'em) so I tend to keep pages open if I expect a reply. That said, most replies are on a 1:1 basis so usually there's no need for the system to track additional replies :)
Of course there are still many times I get a Steam friend request concerning a thread I posted in 2 days ago or so and had completely forgotten about <_< Usually I try to warn people when I've traded and a previous offer is no longer available but...
