Can you please explain to me what exactly I can do with the 2.5 keys?

Either sell them on the community marketplace or use them to buy other games from people on this site in trades.
They're the general form of currency since you can't trade/gift cash from your Steam wallet.

Their real purpose is to open cases on the various games they're from for a chance to get a rare/expensive item
