You NEVER, I mean NEVER go first if he has a key with low rep. Since he isn't going first your common knowledge should already tell you it's a scam.

I think it is OK to trade on keys but you just have to be really careful if you do.

  1. Make sure the person has posted in your thread and not just added you. ( impersonators will just add you )

  2. Check Steam Profile for trader comments.

  3. Check how many games and how long they have been with Steam ( scammers often use indie bundles and exploited keys for multiple accounts. Also someone with 500 games who has had an account for 5 years probably wont risk anything by scamming a key)

  4. Check how many user names they have been known by ( if its a lot be wary )

  5. Check the user with SteamRep

  6. If they have lower rep but are insisting you go first dont trade

Always record the trade so if anyone scams they can be reported and marked on SteamRep. Key trades always carry a risk but if you do all this you can minimize it.
