See, that's why you actually check the rep of people before you trade with them, esp. when they want you to go first. It's why it's there for. Said that, mostly everyone seems to get scammed here when they're new.
Next time around ask for their profile link on ST to view their rep. And then click on 'View Steam profile' to see if it actually links to the same person. When it does, see if you can find your own name in their friends list. Because some people also impersonate other high-rep users by using their name and picture.
